We are constantly trying to find that perfect tripod and head combo that lets you glass and shoot accurately and yet also doesn’t weigh you down. Because humping a massive pack up a mountain is a grind. When you’re vertical, every ounce you can shave off is a win. Most guys get stuck hauling a heavy panhead for their glass and a separate ball head for their rifle—that’s just extra dead weight you don’t need to be carrying. We think we’re on the right track with this new product from Wiser Precision.

We’ve been beating the hell out of the BT-20 Ridge Warden to see if it’s the real deal, and it’s officially our favorite double duty head for the backcountry. It’s one solid unit that does two jobs, and it does them pretty damn well given its under 4oz.

How It Works (Without the Headache)
The Ridge Warden is engineered with a smart detent system.
- For Glassing: When you’re scanning the treeline with your spotting scope, it stays locked in a tilt-only axis. It moves smooth—up, down, left, right—without flopping over sideways.
- For Shooting: You don’t have to fumble with locks or levers when a buck steps out. The weight and leverage of your rifle simply overcomes those internal “notches” (detents). This lets you cant the rifle left or right to get perfectly level, even if your tripod legs are on a nasty slope.
It’s fast, it’s intuitive, and it stays out of your way.

Packs Light, Hits Hard
This thing is a featherweight. At just 3.3oz (3.8 with the handle), you’ll forget it’s even in your pack. But don’t let the weight fool you—it’s rock solid.
- USA Made: Machined from solid billet aluminum and stainless steel.
- Tough Finish: The black anodized coating handles the rain, snow, and dirt of the backcountry without chipping.
- Carbon Handle: It comes with an adjustable carbon fiber handle so you can tweak the ergonomics to fit your specific setup.

The Real Talk
Nothing is perfect. If we have one gripe, it’s that the ball itself is pretty small. Because it’s so compact, you really have to crank down on it to hold a medium to heavy weight rifle steady. It takes a bit of “man-torque” to get it locked tight for a shot. We’d love to see a slightly bigger ball for more friction, but for a head this light, it’s a trade-off we’ll take every day of the week. So if you are packing a lightweight rifle, this is a solid solution, but if your rifle is over 9lbs, you may want to think about a heavier solution like the Aziak Frontcountry Ballhead.

The Bottom Line
The Ridge Warden is for the guy who wants the best of both worlds. It gives you a rock-steady platform for glassing and a reliable rest for shooting without the extra bulk. It’s simple, it’s light, and it’s made right here in the States.
Stop carrying two heads. Get ONE that actually pulls its weight.
