The Guardian Chest Plate is designed to provide a rugged, accessible mounting platform for your sidearm, but not all holsters are created equal when it comes to chest-rig integration. To get the cleanest draw and the most secure fit, there are a few technical nuances you need to consider before you bolt your gear down.
Here is a breakdown of what to look for to ensure your setup is optimized for the field.

1. The “Opposite Hand” Rule for IWB Holsters
If you are planning to use an Inside-the-Waistband (IWB) holster, you need to pay close attention to the mounting surface.
- The Conflict: Standard IWB holsters have the mounting hardware on the “front” face to clip onto a belt. For the Guardian, we need the mounting surface on the back so it can sandwich between the bino harness and the plate.
- The Solution: If you are a right-handed shooter, you should actually purchase a left-handed IWB holster. This flips the mounting surface to the correct side, allowing the pistol to sit flush against the chest plate while maintaining a right-hand draw.

2. Profile Width: Fold-Over vs. Sandwich Styles
Space is at a premium between the straps of your bino harness. The construction of your holster determines how much “real estate” it occupies.
- Preferred: Fold-Over (Taco) Style: These holsters use a single piece of Kydex folded over the firearm with hardware on only one side. This creates a narrow profile, leaving more room for straps and accessories.
- Use with Caution: Sandwich Style: These have compression hardware on both sides. While they work, the extra width can limit your placement options, especially if you are running a weapon light or an optic.

3. Pistol “Presentation” and Ride Height
“Presentation” refers to how much of the pistol grip is exposed and accessible for a clean draw.
- Mounting Hole Location: On many IWB holsters, the mounting holes are high up near the trigger guard. While great for deep concealment in a waistband, it can force the gun to sit too low or too “inboard” on a chest plate.
- Pro Tip: Look for holsters from makers like JC Custom Kydex or Ivory Holsters. These often provide mounting options that allow the pistol to sit higher or further out, giving you a better “purchase” (grip) on the firearm when reaching past bino wings or straps.

4. Shielding and Protection
When you’re in the field, you have bino tethers, straps, and clothing layers to contend with.
- Dual Shielding: We recommend holsters with shielding on both sides (or at least the back). This prevents your gear from snagging and keeps the holster mouth clear, making re-holstering much safer and smoother.

5. Forget the Factory Hardware
One of the most common questions we get is about clips and loops.
Important: The Guardian Chest Plate does not utilize any factory clips or belt loops.
We direct-bolt through the Kydex of your holster. When shopping, don’t worry about what belt attachment it comes with—focus entirely on the hole pattern and the shape of the Kydex itself.
Summary Checklist for Holster Compatibility
| Feature | Recommendation |
| Handedness (IWB) | Order the opposite of your draw hand |
| Construction | Fold-over style for a narrower profile |
| Mounting | Look for versatile hole patterns for better grip access |
| Safety | High shielding to keep straps/tethers clear |
By choosing a holster with these features, you’ll ensure that your weapon, light, and optic combination works in perfect harmony with the Guardian system.
